Comedy, of late, is a regarded genre that is rated low because of the lack of content. They are criticised as a “mindless mass commercial” genre. But movies like HERA PHERI, PARTNER, MASTI, HEYY BABY, etc. have shown that this “commercial” genre can be liked by the critics and the public alike if made with a real intent of causing a tickle in the viewers’ funny bones with some genuine comedy. And DHAMAAL is an addition to the list of such movies.

PLOT Dhamaal is about four friends: Roy (Riteish), a trickster who proclaims himself to be the best detective in the world, Adi (Arshad), who is the “expert” of the group as he has (half) knowledge of almost everything. His younger brother, Manav (Javed) is a dimwit and Boman (Ashish) is a son of a wealthy Parsi contractor who has a talent for mimicking almost any sound.  He is very afraid of his dad, Nari (Asrani). So, this lot of four, are jobless and spend their days in holiday foolery, tricking people for money or their landlady for rent. It so happens one day that amidst their practically worthless life, a life-changing incident happens. They come across a dying underworld don Bose (a cameo by Prem Chopra Prem Chopra is a legend of Hindi cinema and he has >> Read More... ), who in his last minutes tells them the location where he has hidden his lifelong earnings of Rs 10 crores. They decide to receive this fortune changing opportunity with open arms and so plan to go for the hidden money. Little did they know then that a policeman, Inspector KabirNayak ( Sanjay Dutt July 29, 1959, was the day when the two legends of >> Read More... ), who has spent his last ten years chasing Bose, is also after money. Nayak tries to catch and then interrogate the foursome and making them blurt out the location of the hidden money. But they somehow manage to escape and start their expedition for the money. Nayak, determined to find them and thus the money, starts a search investigation for them. The friends eventually get split in their journey and take their path for getting to the money. Here starts a hilarious marathon for the money which culminates in a ‘twisting’ end.

REVIEW Indra Kumar Indra Kumar is a prominent award-winning Indian fi >> Read More... and his team have delivered this time. The movie is full of witty one-liners and hilarious situation humor. The film is a laughing riot from the onset till the end albeit few moments in the second half. Although some funny moments are inspired by Hollywood movies like Bean, Johny English, Road Trip Travelling, Roaming and having fun is always what >> Read More... , Rat Race and Dude, where’s my car? The movie as a whole is a pitch perfect joyride. The lead actors carry off their role with aplomb.Riteish is fun, as always, but his character suffers in the second half because of lack of meat in his track. Arshad is superb as Adi. Ashish Chaudhary shows potential in comedy. Sanjay Dutt is alright. But the best of the lot is JavedJaffery as the dim witManav. His timing is spot on, and the role looks tailor made for him. His body language, dialogue delivery, and expressions show the amount of earnest effort put in by him for this role. Direction by Indrakumar is very good. He manages to extract the best out of his actors and keeps the balance between the characters and humour. The real hero of this movie are the dialogues, the punches and so the writers have done a brilliant job. Cinematography by Vijay Arora Vijay Arora (Born: 27th Dec 1944) was a prominent >> Read More... is good. He captures the valley ridden path from Mumbai to Goa and the locales of Goa well. Music is okay and doesn’t contribute much to the film. On the downside, the second half is not as hilarious as the first half. The screenplay is a bit weak and could have been better, especially in the second half. Some scenes could have been trimmed in the second half, and editing could have been better.

THUMBS UP - Hilarious punches and dialogues - Performance from the Leas - Javed Jaffery - Plenty of ribs tickling scenes

THUMBS DOWN - Editing - Scratchy second half - Some overdone scenes in the second half

VERDICT This movie is a fun feast from the start till the end. It ensures a laughing marathon for 2hrs 16mins and is strongly recommended to all.
