Plot
Ajay Dixit(Varun Dhawan) a narcissist marries a girl named Nisha (Janhvi Kapoor) who is more intelligent than him only to find out that she has epilepsy. And as an image-conscious loser, he starts ignoring her, creating a rift between them, to give the marriage a last chance, Nisha goes with Ajay on their honeymoon to Europe to resolve their marriage where they find out about one of the worst atrocities to happen in the world.
Star performance
Varun Dhawan embodies the character traits well. It gives you the feeling of annoyance whenever he brags or says something. Janhvi Kapoor again is struggling with her dialogue delivery. She does well regarding emoting but lacks in the dialogue department. The supporting cast has done a commendable job. Prateek Pachori has excellent comic timing, Manoj Pahwa as usual steals every scene he features in. Mukesh Tiwari has done a plethora of negative roles and excels in this one also. Anjuman Saxena has also done an excellent job as Ajay’s mother.
Analysis
The film has a solid first half. Keeping the viewers engaged. Ajay has no interest in his job and spends his time maintaining an image as the only motive in his life, and only for that reason marries Nisha, a pretty, educated, homely girl who will upgrade his image. The film showcases Janhvi Kapoor’s character as a “Modern independent girl,” but in the movie, she puts up with Ajay’s abuse for ten months for a character like Ajay who shows no signs of redemption. Even if this is for the sake of the story it don’t sit well with traits Nisha’s character has. The film’s flow changes the moment the couple goes to Germany. The parallels of World War 2 with a troubled relationship doesn't sit well. It would’ve been okay if they tried to gain perspective from it, but to use that as a problem solver is a mess. Using Hitler’s ideology as human greed, the concentration camp is used to show the suffocation the couple is going through and in the end saying every relationship goes through an Auschwitz’s journey like REALLY!!!. Making parallels with one of the greatest tragedies to ever in human history is wrong on so many levels. A sense of realization only happens to Ajay when the couple visits the gas chambers, and he imagines Nisha is suffocating. That scene is simply hard to watch. The film is all over the place. The only saving grace is the music and the performances of the supporting cast. Bawaal is World War 2 helping a couple keep a marriage in unison.

Verdict
If you can let go of The Holocaust parallel you can enjoy this film. It does have some charm and humor, but in the first half.
