“Aashiqui 2” has no resemblance as such or continuity with the original Aashiqui, except that it is produced by the same production house and like its predecessor is an out and out musical. However, with no linkage or continuity with the original, the use of the name seems mainly for the purpose of using a successful and tried brand to promote a film with relative newcomers.

Plot: It is the love story of the two main characters Rahul Jaykar played by Aditya Roy Kapoor and Aarohi, portrayed by Shraddha Kapoor Shraddha Kapoor, born on March 3rd, 1989, is a you >> Read More... , who meet at Goa where Rahul had gone for a musical show, being a celebrity singer. However, being increasingly under alcoholic influence, Rahul ends up in a brawl and walks off to a nearby bar where he finds Aarohi as a bar singer. Impressed with her dedication to singing, he tells her to come to Mumbai and never to sing again in a bar. Being a huge fan of Rahul she immediately quits her job and rushes to Mumbai. Although Rahul fixes up her meeting with an established record producer named Saigal and enacted by Mahesh Thakur Mahesh Thakur who has been in industry for 19 year >> Read More... , the plans get upset when Rahul gets involved in an attack by rowdies and Aarohi is unable to contact him. Even his manager plays spoilsport and Aarohi is forced to go back to bar singing to support her family. After recovering, Rahul arranges to put Aarohi on a firm singing career, but he himself again sinks into alcoholism. Aarohi thinks of breaking her singing career and also moves over to Rahul’s place to rehabilitate him, in spite of her mother’s conservative reservations. Things settle only temporarily, but again incidents occur that drive Rahul to alcoholism and despair, till he decides to end his life by jumping from a bridge, to avoid being a burden on Aarohi. Deeply saddened Aarohi wants to end her career but is persuaded to carry on, as that was Rahul’s last wish. In a final poignant moment, she signs her autograph as Aarohi Rahul Jaykar” to perpetuate her unfulfilled desire to marry him.

The film brings back a nostalgic taste of the old world of romanticism, flavoured as it is with soulful music. Although the main actors are all new, they have rendered powerful and highly convincing portrayals. It is not a first appearance for Aditya Roy Kapoor, but getting to play the lead role seems to have pepped him up sufficiently to make him deliver a very intense portrayal befitting the character that is at war with itself. In a similar take, Shraddha Kapur graduates into a lead role showing proper sensitivity to her roles especially towards the climax when her mentor and lover leaves her and the world. What was remarkable also was the manner in which the two leads have gelled with each other. It was also a pleasant surprise to see director Mohit Suri Mohit Suri has directed many Indian movies mostly >> Read More... tackle a relatively “soft” subject like a romantic musical, drawing away from his usual genre of crime and thrillers.

While the original “Aashiqui” had its musical score by the duo of Nadeem Shravan at their peak, Ashiqui 2 has four different composers, but the music has been equally appealing, with several memorable numbers.

Verdict: The ambience of the film is very pleasing and would appeal to a large section of moviegoers with its music coming as an added bonus, making you hum along spontaneously.
