INTRODUCTION:
Jean-Marc Vallée brings to us a film depicting the hiking journey of a young woman in search of solace. The film is based on the book, 'Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail’ which is Cheryl Strayed's memoir.
PLOT:
Cheryl Strayed, a young woman deeply shaken by her mother’s death owing to cancer has lost what is called the balance in life. She dived in a pool of rash decisions like taking up drugs and having sex with strangers, thus ending her marriage. Another rash decision, perhaps, the most dangerous one was- to go hiking over a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone, and without any training whatsoever. The journey ahead includes realisations of her unpreparedness for hiking, meeting hikers and campers, running into hunters, and finally having a memorable conversation with a young boy whose singing makes her miss her mother.

ANALYSIS:
All the elements of the film are the perfect ingredients for a recipe called ‘Wild’. To begin with, the reckless behavior of Cheryl provides the base. Then the entire journey into the wild, literally, adds the natural elements to the film, apart from the chance encounters with a set of hunters and the other set of difficulties she faces being an untrained and amateur hiker. The added high emotional quotient of the film depicted through flashbacks of Cheryl’s childhood memories with her mother, is sure to leave the eyes watery. The film attracts viewership from all ages and backgrounds.
WHAT’S THERE?
1. Thrill, adventure and emotions- all in one place.
2. Good direction and setting.
3. Commendable performances.
WHAT’S NOT THERE?
1. The voice-over at the end seems to have gone wrong.
2. Deeper take on Cheryl’s relationships with people on the trail lacks from the film but is present in the book.
3. A bit less focus on the real hiking journey.
VERDICT:
Wild is a must-watch film for people from all ages.
