Plot:

The movie narrates the real-life story of P.T. Barnum (Jackman), an American showman and politician who went from poverty to riches and fame, by creating a sensation in the show business that procured worldwide fame and acclaim. The movie narrates how Barnum, who had lost his job as a clerk, deceives a bank into giving him a loan and starts a wax museum, which slowly progresses into show business and then into a circus. It traces the falls and fortunes of the circus and Barnum’s family life.

Analysis:

The movie tries hard to dazzle the viewer, by bringing in the charm and glitter of Barnum's showman life. While the film fails to rightly capture and represent the character of Barnum, it is an enjoyable watch. Barnum's intriguing family life is not addressed at depth, which would have engaged viewers. The movie, however, has a feel-good air to it. The visuals and the soundtrack for which the movie won Golden Globe nominations, reflects the dazzle and charm of showman business. Where the narration faltered, the cast has made up. Hugh Jackman executed his character beautifully.

Star Performances:

The cast is what makes the movie memorable. Hugh Jackman rightly deserved the nomination for best actor in the Golden Globe. The cast is extremely entertaining and committed and has shown utmost sincerity to the characters they were assigned.

What’s there?

1. The star ensemble dazzles throughout the movie and saves the movie from a potential failure.

2. The movie presents stunning visuals all through the 2 hours.

3. The lively background score, songs, and choreography fare well in the context of the story.

What’s not there?

1. The movie does not provide any great insights into Barnum’s life.

2. The narration often falters as the script progresses.

Verdict

The Greatest Showman is an enjoyable watch and portrays some stellar performances, however, fails to meet the great expectation and does not produce a memorable impact.
