Plot

It was the time of 1945 when England had attacked Germany and they had won the war. We see the main character of the story, Rachael, who was traveling to Germany to live with her husband Lewis. Lewis was in a high position officer in England, now that the war has ended, he has called his wife to start a new life. A big house in Germany is being vacated for them, where a wealthy man, Stephen is already staying there. Stephen was the owner of the house but now as Germany has lost the war, he will have to stay in camps with all his belongings. Lewis picks up Rachael from the station, on reaching their new home Stephen welcomes them. That night they talk about the difficulties and losses they faced during wartime. One of the biggest griefs was, that their son Michael got killed in the war due to which Rachael was disturbed and started smoking. The next day, Rachael saw a girl, Freda, she was Stephen’s daughter. Lewis had let Stephen and Freda to stay in the house because they were downhearted as her mother was killed in the war and they had nowhere to go. Rachael complains to Lewis about letting Stephen and Freda to stay. The story, towards the end, took a sharp and entertaining turn, which is full of drama.

Star Performance

The cast is limited but is well chosen. They were successful in conveying the emotions, not through their dialogues but through their body language and reactions. The filmmakers have done an amazing job in portraying the war-time situation and making the viewers live and feel the moments and misery.

Analysis

The Aftermath solicitously captures all the horrors of war, for both the conqueror and the defeater.  The film can make you experience two contrasting feelings of sadness and happiness because each of the characters has some negative and some positive sides. It is a little challenging to digest that one character can be so understanding and forgiving, even when the character itself has some blame to be taken over. The grievous losses suffered by each character are portrayed subtly and accurately; you can genuinely understand every character's behaviour, actions, and motivations, even if you disagree with them. Also, the movie is successful in showing visuals that represent the side effects of bombing during the war and how it affects every survivor’s life. Most importantly the story also conveys how genuine and unconditional love is always above the momentary happiness.

What’s There?

  • The movie makes you come face to face with the unavoidable complexities that come with a war.
  • The movie also conveys a meaningful message regarding the importance and value of your admirers.

What’s Not There?

  • The script is quite dull. The viewers may not feel the connection with the film until the last twenty minutes.

Verdict

The film fulfills all the requirements of a gratified drama including the themes of love, lust, forgiveness and loneliness. The film is a bit slow and cannot be watched more than once.
