Plot
Brandon Sullivan is a corporate executive in New York City, living a rather complicated life with his twisted desires. However, when his sister Sissy, who happens to be a lounge singer, overextends her stay, things become rather complicated for him.
Star Performances
Following a remarkable debut with ‘Hunger,’ Steve McQueen does the unconventional with ‘Shame.’ He is not at all hesitant in showing the dark sides of sex addiction, and he is brave enough in his attempt.
Michael Fassbender as the horny corporate rancho only proves his versatility in almost any role imaginable. He is ably supported by Carey Mulligan, who compliments the character of Brandon with her performance as Sissy.
Analysis
A gentleman once mentioned, “If you want to show something not acceptable publicly, either do it without hesitation or don’t do it all.’ It seems Steve McQueen took the former a bit too seriously.
However, for all its profanity, ‘Shame’ is surprisingly a good mix of both emotions and erotica. The story is of a corporate guy, who is excessively addicted to sex and likes to keep it that way. The only trouble with him is the unexpected arrival of his sister, who has her troubles to sort out.
With a slick runtime, Steve McQueen makes the best of his plot and refuses to hold himself back. Those who like clean, family entertainers may find this rather unsettling. However, if you are strictly for the artwork, irrespective of its intensity, this film is more than a welcome surprise.
The acting performances are also top-notch. Michael Fassbender as Brandon only goes on to prove why he is the go-to choice for such unconventional roles. Carey Mulligan as his sister Sissy gives her best as a vulnerable, depressed lounge singer who fears rejection. Amongst the other actors, James Badge Dale as Brandon’s ‘partner in crime’ David packs a solid punch.

Verdict
‘Shame’ is the classic example of how appearances can be deceptive. It packages itself as an unapologetic erotica. However, the more you explore this film, the more you understand the deeper message of the film. If you have a knack for watching something unconventional, go for this one. Â
