Plot
One night, a depressed and lonely man makes a phone call to a newspaper, requesting the interview that he previously declined. This man is none other than Yves Saint Laurent Click to look into! >> Read More... , aka YSL, who is a popular French designer. The rest of the film revolves around YSL’s journey as a fashion designer, and his view of the nightlife of Paris, as well as his unspoken desires.Â
Star PerformancesÂ
The set designs of this movie are phenomenal. Even if you don’t like the narrative or the performances, you cannot help but admire the details that the makers have focused upon.Â
Being one of the two films on the same designer, Saint Laurent’s YSL, i.e. Gaspard Ulliel gives a deeper insight into the controversial, yet popular French designer, who was once the apple of the eye of the French fashion industry.Â
AnalysisÂ
If there is an award for fashion with a difference, France would win it hands down. ‘Saint Laurent’ is a vivid description of one of the illustrious luminaries of the same, i.e. Yves Saint Laurent. However, the Bertrand Bonnello directorial has more focus on YSL’s personality, rather than his unique desires, as portrayed in another movie released the same year.Â
Through the medium of a telephonic interview, YSL narrates his unique journey, offering a glimpse into the diverse world of French fashion, as well as the much-talked-about nightlife of Paris. The actors portraying the acclaimed designer have done their best, with the younger version, as played by Gaspard Ulliel being the standout performer.Â
Since ‘Saint Laurent’ is more focused on YSL’s personal life, it does not shed much light on his unique relationships, though a mention is given about each. Jeremie Renier as YSL’s partner Pierre Berge does strike a chord, but not enough to leave a lasting impression on the audiences. The movie takes its own sweet time to build the narrative. As such, those with a flair for slick, fast-paced films might not find it that impressive.Â
What's There?
• Vivid, grand sets by the production designÂ
• Performances by Gaspard Ulliel and Helmut BergerÂ
What's Not There?Â
• Slow pace of the filmÂ
• Less focus on Y Saint Laurent’s untold stories
VerdictÂ
‘Saint Laurent’ is a slow burner, but vividly portrays the journey of Yves Saint Laurent, one of the famous fashion designers of France. The acting performances are impressive, but the slow-paced narrative might irk some. You can watch this if you wish to know about the French fashion of the early 60s and the 70s.Â
