Plot

The film follows the events of 21st June, 2028, when a riot occurs in Los Angeles to protest against the privatization of water. Sherman, played by Sterling K. Brown, planned to carry out a bank robbery in the midst of the riots. The robbery fails, and his brother Lev, played by Brian Tyree Henry and one of his other men is seriously injured while one died during the attempted robbery. They seek refuge in Hotel Artemis, an establishment specifically for professional criminals who pay a hefty membership. The hotel is run by Jean Thomas also known as ‘the nurse’, played by Jodie Foster. Sherman and Lev are allowed in while their teammate is turned down. Lev is given the most advanced medical care available. In the hotel, the hotel’s set of rules are to be strictly adhered to. There, Sherman met Acapulco, played by Charlie Day, an arms dealer, and Nice, played by Sofia Boutella, an old acquaintance of Sherman. The film follows the events that occur after ‘The Wolfking’, the owner of the hotel and a very dangerous criminal is bought to the hotel for treatment.

Star Performance

The cast consists of extremely talented individuals who play their respective characters to a tee. Jodie Foster delivers a stellar performance as “The Nurse”. She perfectly portrays her characters vulnerabilities, struggles, and shortcomings.

Analysis

The film has a great cast and concept, but the film suffers because of the overcomplicated pace and storyline. The film has too much happening and too many things to keep track of. The unnecessary complexity makes the film boring.

What’s There?

• A stellar cast with Jodie Foster, Sofia Boutella, Dave Bautista, Sterling K. Brown, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, and Charlie Day

• The film has a unique concept of a criminal specifically for criminals, an enigmatic doctor, a gathering of criminals, and future technology

• Jodie Foster gives a spectacular performance in the film

What’s Not There?

• The film spends too much time on the buildup, causing the ending to seem disappointing

• The film is not well paced

Verdict

The film depicts a lawless, dystopian future, with chaos and disorder all around. The hotel in the film is the very symbol of such moral ruin as the hotel only caters to its criminal clientele. The concept is unique and the performances in the film are good. The film would be a good watch for science-fiction, action, and crime genre enthusiasts.
