Plot

Brooklyn plumber brothers Mario and Luigi fall through a pipe and end up in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario ends up in Princess Peach’s realm, while Luigi is trapped in the Dark Lands, ruled by the evil Koopa king Bowser. Bowser wants to marry Peach, and destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if she says no. He imprisons Luigi to get to Mario. Mario teams up with Peach, Toad and the Kongs to take down Bowser. What happens next is the rest of the story.

Analysis

It’s set in a parallel universe where dinosaurs are humanoids, and live alongside other creatures. Chris Pratt is great, Jack Black is spot on his character and Charlie Day is fine as Luigi. The visuals are fantastic, featuring action and platforming elements from the games. But the pace is too fast, with no breathing room for characters, and the dialogue is shallow. The humor is good, though. The plot follows the game storyline with new twists and has some intense action and scary moments, especially with Bowser and his minions.

Star performance

Chris Pratt has played a tremendous part as Mario; he looks fun and energetic for kids to enjoy his character. Jack Black also played his part well as Bowser. Charlie Day's performance was decent. Anya Taylor-Joy was elegant and poised as Princess Peach. Overall the actors in The Super Mario Bros. Movie are good and the appearances were appreciable.
