Set in contemporary Mexico, Armando Alvarez is born and raised to work at his father’s homestead in his lifetime. As a keeper of the ranch, he faces a lot of financial difficulties, some debts incurred by his father. As Armando encounters all his difficulties, his younger brother Raul, comes with his fiancée Sonia. Raul, being a successful businessman, and a well known figure internationally, has hardly helped them earlier. When Armando’s younger brother comes, he still hopes for a better life, without all the financial troubles, as he pledges to settle all financial matters. Things take a turn when Armando falls in love with Sonia, Raul’s business deals result in a bit less than legitimate and lastly, when they find themselves in a fight with the most rugged, scary drug lord. Onza, the drug lord, is a badass with bikini clad women around him and muscles totting like machine guns.
Analysis:
What made Ferrell do this movie? He might have got A’s in Spanish? Or he’s already been a part of many genre spoofs already, so why not now as well? The movie is a testament to a low budget western movie, a jolly thumbs up to horse opera’s which to my small knowledge of movies has received an average response from its audience. The story is a simple and deliberative one, with excess of melodrama, and too much of pomp and show, be it the hot fiancée of Raul, who is quick to become Armando’s love interest, or the Narco don, Onza, the hot women in the skimpiest of clothes, some may be with none or negligible clothing, surrounding the richest man like climbers climbing the wall for sustenance.  Some machine guns to put a weight on his machismo, an epitome of melodrama, with forced laughter and jokes which either can be negligible or makes you awkward. Its that kind of wink nostalgia which Tarantino likes to employ, the only difference here, it forces even a smile on your face, while Tarantino is natural. But you need to give credit to Ferrell, as his fans would absolutely be thrilled to see their star, from dumb to hero pathway, of the story line being portrayed par excellence. In total, from bad film making to acting, painted backdrop, to long melodramatic pauses, this movie is sure to remind you of a 1960’s Bollywood movie.Â
