Abhinandan Varthaman, the Wing Commander, who was a captive in Pakistan for a few days in February, was brought back successfully by the Indian government. As he suffered from injuries, he didn’t fly for a few months. After getting the nod from the Institute of Aerospace Medicine, Abhi flew the MiG-21 fighter aircraft. Along with him, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa flew from the Pathankot Airbase. The IAF chief stated that he was proud to have accompanied Abhinandan.
On 27th February 2019, his fighter jet was attacked by Pakistan army and he fell into the Pakistan limit and was caught as a captive until 1st March. The government has conferred the third highest gallantry award, Vir Chakra to Abhinandan.
