He was involved in an intense dogfight on 14 December 1971 with the Pakistani Sabre jets near the Srinagar airbase.

Sekhon was martyred in action, and he was posthumously conferred with Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award ever. Till date, the IAF officer remains the only non-Army officer to be conferred with this Award.
