Today the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken the world by storm, producing multiple movies and series every year, each earning billions of dollars at the box office. While Hollywood is no doubt the biggest player in the superhero genre, India too has produced some great superhero movies over the years. Today, we are taking a look at some of the best superhero movies that have been made in Indian cinema.

Probably the most popular Indian film in the superhero genre, Krrish was a sequel to 2003’ Koi Mil Gaya. Krrish follows Krrishna, a man who inherits superhuman abilities from his father. He then goes to Singapore and uses his powers to rescue his father from an evil scientist.

Krrish portrayed something that was never seen in India before. It appealed to the kids as well as the adults. It became a hit at the box office. Fans have been waiting for ages for the next sequel.

2. Ra.One (2011)

Ra. One was one of the most innovative movies at the time, combining science fiction with the superhero genre, and exploring the wonders of VFX. The story focuses on a video game character who comes to life to hunt the player who beat him in-game.

Ra. One was the most expensive Indian film at the time of its release, with a budget of 150 cr, and it featured some great action sequences. It also generated buzz as two of the film’s songs were sung by Akon. Sadly it failed at the box office.

3. Mr. India (1988)

Known as India’s first superhero film, Mr. India is a classic today. It follows the story of Arun, a man who lives with orphans, and is harassed by a gangster who is after his house. After one of the orphans dies, Arun uses his father’s invention, an invisibility watch, to fight back.

Mr. India gave us one of the most iconic villains in the history of Bollywood, Mogambo. The songs are also tremendous. The movie has stood the test of time even after 35 years of release, and still holds great rewatchable value today.

4. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018)

One of the best superhero origin stories, Bhavesh Joshi focuses on Sikander, who decides to become a masked vigilante to avenge his friend’s murder. Soon, it becomes his mission to end corruption and the mafia rule.

It deserved way more praise than it got from the audience. Featuring brilliant writing, direction, acting, and action sequences, this movie is a must-watch for superhero fans. It remains a hugely underrated movie in Bollywood.

5. Minnal Murali (2021)

One of the best superhero films in recent times, Minnal Murali follows Jaison, who gains superpowers after getting struck by lightning. He then uses his powers to fight evil and give his village the superhero it needs.

The use of VFX and elaborative sets is minimal, as the director focuses more on the human side of our superhero. This film features brilliant performances, excellent writing, and direction, and deserves much applause for a marvelous attempt.

6. Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2019)

A Flying Jatt is the story of Aman, who gains superpowers after an accident. The movie incorporated the superhero genre with religious themes and it turned out to be a light-hearted family film.

There are sequences of Aman’s training montages and him rescuing others and much more. He is not perfect but he is always evolving. He is not the bravest at all times but has a heart of gold. 8. Mugamoodi (2012)

He then wears a superhero costume and helps the police in bringing down a gang. Mugamoodi features great action sequences and slick cinematography along with a well-written screenplay and outstanding performances.

9. Shahenshah (1988)

One of Amitabh Bachchan’s best action movies, Shahenshah saw him as Vijay, a corrupt officer by day, but a crime-fighting vigilante by night. Shahenshaw strikes forces of evil and injustice and he was a nightmare for the bad guys.

The movie features a great direction with Big B’s outstanding performance. The dialogues of the film remain legendary even today. Shahenshah’s hairstyle and body armor also became iconic. It was the second highest grossing film of 1988.

10. Kanthaswamy (2009)

Kanthaswamy follows the titular character who has the superpower to make anyone’s wishes come true, and he uses his power to solve the financial woes of the poor and needy.

He is a CBI officer by day and wants to take down corrupt officials with stashes of black money hidden away. It is essentially a fantasy thriller combined with the superhero genre. Kantaswamy features some great action choreography and brilliant performances.
