The plot of this horror/comedy film is very gripping from the start. A couple arrives at their ancestral homeland. The husband is an aristocrat by descent and chooses to live in his family mansion that is allegedly haunted by the spirit of a courtesan. The then king had beheaded his lover precisely the night she was planning on eloping with him. The king planned on marrying the courtesan himself and imprisoned her until the wedding day on which she hanged herself leaving behind a letter cursing the royal family and promising that her spirit would never allow any royalty to reside in the mansion.
As it were, the king died mysteriously after some time. After viewers are told of the legend, they are introduced to the wife (Vidya Balan) and her scoffing attitude at any talk of spirits. A lover of everything historical and cultural, she believes that there is a treasure buried somewhere in the mansion and sets about to explore the forbidden floor where the spirit of the courtesan is supposed to reside. The director builds up the right amount of tension as she is shown to be opening the locked door and entering the ancient room covered in portraits of royalty.
It is there that we see the portrait of the courtesan and soon after Vidya Balan screams when she hears movement. At that moment one fully expects that the courtesan would materialize out of thin air in all her traditional clothing and attack Vidya, only to find out that it’s a rat that has been scurrying around.
