Waheeda Rehman was a complete natural. It would just come to her the moments she looked at the camera. She had originally wanted to become a doctor, but fate had its own plans and she ventured into acting at an early age.

The first film in which Waheeda had been signed for was CID. The film was produced by Guru Dutt and had Dev Anand in the lead, who by then was already a big star. It is said that he was so handsome, girls would fall off their terrace as they looked at him. So the shy girl Waheeda did not know how to address such and resorted to Mr. Dev Anand.
When the heroine of his new film came up to him and said Good morning Mr. Anand, a surprised Dev Anand looked left and right, wondering who was being addressed. When Waheeda said she was addressing him, the actor forbade her to so henceforth, as it would create formality between them, and then he would not be able to romance her in the film. It took a lot of effort on Dev’s part to finally start calling him Dev.
In all, the actress has been honored with four awards from the government. In 1971, she was given the National Award for best actress for her the film Reshma Aur Shera, which had released in 1971. Then, in 1972, she was awarded with the Padma Shri. In 2006, she was awarded the NTR National Award and finally in 2011, she was honored with the Padma Bhushan.
In all, the actress has won the Filmfare awards thrice. Her first award was for the best actress for her movie Guide, which she won in the year 1966. Then in the year 1968, she won the same award for Neel Kamal. Finally, in the year 1994, she was awarded the award for Lifetime Achievement.
Guru Dutt had been a driving force in Waheeda Rehman’s life, as he was the one brought her incredible talent to Bollywood. Rumors of something brewing between them went around for a long time, but the actress never accepted them. When probed, the actress just refused to comment.
The actress has many hobbies, but she has particularly loved photography for quite a while now. She was in love with the art since her younger days and therefore wanted to visit Africa’s National Parks.

When Waheeda’s father died, Waheeda had to bid adieu to her lifelong ambition of getting a medical license and she ventured into acting. Then, when in the year 1955, Guru Dutt offered her the film ‘CID’, she left for Mumbai to pursue greatness, but her mother died in that year. Waheeda had been offered the role in CID during the success party of her Telugu film “Rojulu Maarayyi”.
Although the actress has been a part of her several films, her first notable film was in the year 1957, and was called ‘Pyaasa’, then in the year 1958, she appeared in 12 o’ clock. Then came "Kaagaz Ke Phool", in 1959, then in 1962, she did "Sahib Bibi Aur Gulaam". There was also "Solva Saal" which released in 1958, "Baat Ek Raat Ki" in 1962, in 1964, came ‘Kohra’, then Guide in 1965, which was followed by "Teesri Kasam" in 1966. In 1968, came "Neel Kamal". In the same year, she also gave another blockbuster, called ‘Aadmi’.
