Neerja is a biographical film on the life of the head purser of Pan Am Flight 73, which was hijacked. Neerja is a 22-year-old, who after an unhappy marriage is recuperating with the help of her family and friends. She sets off on her first flight as Head Purser, when tragedy strikes and they are hijacked. She, along with the other air hostesses keep their calm and try their best to protect the passengers, from quietly disposing American passports to serving food and drinks to the passengers against the hijackers wishes. Throughout the film, we keep hearing Neerja’s father’s words ‘Mera Bahadur Beta’, and it’s these words that ultimately inspire her to her courageous but untimely death at the hands of the hijackers, while protecting three children. The film closes with a touching eulogy from Neerja’s mother a year later while receiving her Ashok Chakra Award.
