Born in the year 1972, Sunitha Krishnan is the Indian social worker and also the founder of an NGO named Prajwala that helps the sex-trafficked people to rehabilitate in the society. She has tried to spread awareness about sex trafficking via social, political, and legal ways. She is also trying to collaborate with government and seek out policies against trafficking.
She has almost seen the entire country with her parents as his father worked in the Survey Department which made maps of the country. So he always took Sunitha everywhere. In today's materialistic world where everyone runs after money, Sunitha had a passion for working in social fields. Just at an age of eight, she began teaching different dances to the mentally challenged kids. When she was twelve, she was already running education centers in the slum areas for the orphans and the underprivileged children. When she was fifteen, she worked on a literacy project for the community of Dalits.
Disastrous incident worked as an impetus for her. She became more determined to work instead of sitting at home as a victim. She had obtained an environmental science degree from the St. Joseph College located in Bangalore. She also completed MSW from Mangalore. Sunitha Krishnan had protested against the Competition for Miss World, which held in Bangalore, and she got arrested for it. She remained in custody for two long months.
Her parents had always supported her brother more than Krishnan. Her brother Varghese Thecknath was a social activist as well and a founder of PIN (People's Initiative Network) in Hyderabad. When Sunitha was set free from the custody, her parents did not support her and her lifestyle. So she decided to start afresh. She joined PIN and became the in-charge of the safety of young women. In the year 2003, Krishnan drafted policies against sex trafficking and was also appointed as an advisor to the Government of Kerala's policy for Women and Children to fight sexual violence in the year 2011.
But getting rid of politics, she had to quit this post. She also went to The United States to meet students in auditoriums to spread awareness about the social issues. She has also been involved in filmmaking and scripted around fourteen documentaries. These included Mein Aur Meri Saccharin in Hindi, The Man, His Mission, Anamika-The Nameless, etc. Sunitha is a bold woman as she has been assaulted fourteen times and has also received death calls and threats. But she doesn’t give up and continues her good work.
