for her role of a beggar in a play `Aakali’. After her plays `Tulasi’ and `Sakkubai’ became popular, she got a chance to meet producer-director Ghantasala Balaramaiah who gave her a break in his film `Garuda Garvabhangam’ through which she marked her debut.

and E. V. V. Satyanarayana. Infact, her last movie was Premaku Swagatham (2002), directed by S.V. Krishna Reddy. Nirmalamma received numerous awards including Nandi Awards, Filmfare and Sitara Award for her best performance and contribution to the industry. She was the most talented actress and was loved by the audiences for her realistic portray of Mother and Grandmother. She is fondly remembered as 'teluginti baama'. Her famous movies include Shankarabharam, Yamagola, Padiharella Vayassu, Shubhasankalpam, Apadbandhavudu, Swathimythyam and many more. Her last public appearance was at the Vajrothsava celebrations of Telugu cinema.
On the personal front, she was married to GV Krishna Rao. She had no kids of her own. However, she had adopted a daughter named Kavitha. She breathed her last on 19 February 2009 due to a prolonged illness. The entire tinsel town Telugu industry paid their homage to this Veteran Actress and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family members.
