Sakshi Malik

Sakshi Malik was born on 3rd September,1992 in Mokhra village, Rohtak district, Haryana, India. She is a freestyle wrestler. She is the daughter of Sukhbir Malik, who was a bus conductor in Delhi under Delhi Transportation Corporation, and Sudesha Malik, who is local health clinic supervisor. She got motivated to take up wrestling because of her grandfather, Badlu Ram who himself was also a wrestler. From a early age of 12, she started her training in wrestling under a coach named Ishwar Dahiya, at an Akhara in Chhotu Ram Stadium. But that was just the beginning as she was also trained by Kuldeep Malik, Kripa Shankar, and Mandeep. In 2010, came her first success at the Junior World Championships as she won the bronze medal in 58 kg freestyle event and led herself as a professional wrestler in the international arena. 2014 came and she came in with a surprise as she won gold in the 60 kg category at the Dave Schultz International Tournament. And no matter what happened after that she never stopped, and nothing in her way could let her passion and dedication for the game falter. Malik competed two rounds and came in third position to claim a bronze medal in a total of five rounds in the 60 kg category at the 2015 Asian Championships in Doha, Qatar. Bronze medal was a close call in the fourth round until she beat Ayaulym Kassymova of Kazakhstan. She defeated China’s Zhang Lan in the semifinal of the 58 kg category in May, 2016 and qualified for Rio Olympics 2016. . Despite trailing 0-5 at one stage, in the repechage medal playoff, she became India’s first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal. Sakshi Malik has also represented the ‘Colors Delhi Sultans’ in the second edition of the Pro Wrestling League held in January of 2017. She has also been featured in the women’s day campaign or as known as #EveryWomenSrong for JSW group who also happens to be her sponsor. Malik has completed a master’s degree in physical education from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak. In September of 2016, she was appointed as the university’s wrestling director. She is currently employed by the North Indian Railways in the commercial department of its Delhi division she is also a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program. She was promoted from senior clerk to gazetted officer rank, after winning a bronze medal at Rio. The wrestler announced her engagement after the Rio Olympics to fellow wrestler Satyawart Kadian, and got married to him on April 2, 2017. Satyawart Kadian happens to be an international level wrestler and has won medals in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
