Susarla Dakshinamurthi

Susarla Dakshinamurthi was a music composer, professional playback singer, music director, television anchor, record producer, Carnatic instrumentalist, and much more. It is a very rare case that so many qualities reside within a single person, but Susarla was such a man. 11th November was his birth date in the year 1921. His birthplace was Pedakallipathhi in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, India. He was also a very good violin player. He had contributed his talents in some Bollywood movies, Tamil movies, Sri Lankan films and even in Hollywood. So he reached over the boundaries of his country. An interesting fact is that his grandfather was a student of the famous ancient musician Thyagaraja.

He was a part of the clan formed by him. He had been active in the music world from the year 1946 to 1984. He has sung and written some songs, and all of them have been a class apart. He was born in an educated family. His father’s name was S. K. Sastry. His mother’s name was Sri Annapuramma. He graduated from college with a degree in Arts. His degree also specialized in classical music. Just at the age of nine years, he became a professional in playing violin. For some time in the year 1938, he worked as a professional Harmonium player in a musical band. He was also a radio jockey in the All India Radio channel as an A- Grade artist. He graduated from Andhra University.

Later on, he moved into cinemas and worked alongside the legendary composer C. R. Subburaman. The movie Santhanam Samaram in the year 1950 was a big hit because of the music which was done by Susarla. He has composed and sung many hit songs of that time. He has produced some of the best musical pieces till date. Unfortunately, in 1972 he developed a high degree of Diabetes which led to the loss of vision in one of his eyes. His efficiency in vision was lost, but his talent in singing remained unaffected. He died in an interesting manner. Murthy became blind in 1987 and died in the year 2012, on 9th of February. He died at his residence in Chennai five minutes before the ambulance arrived at the scene. He was a very talented person.
