Govindarajula Subba Rao was a Telugu drama and film actor born in 1895 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Rao’s first-ever stage performance can be traced to his acting in Merchant of Venice in his school days in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh. He also acted in a play called Prataparudreeyam, written by Vedam Venkataraya Sastry, a famous Sanskrit and Telugu poet and dramatist. While practicing medicine in Chennai, he acted in many plays, including Gopakhyanam. He made his debut in Telugu films with Malapilla in 1938.
