Padma Bhushan Dr. Bommireddy NarasimhaReddy is a legendary award-winning director of Indian cinema. He was one of the first people from South India to win the Dada Saheb Phalke Award and one of the first Indian film celebrities to earn the Doctor of Letters honor. Bommireddy NarasimhaReddy, popularly known as B.N. Reddy was born on 16th November 1908 in a village called Kothapalli in the Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh. His father is NarasimhaReddy, and he has two younger brothers. His brother, B. Theatre plays fascinated B.N. Reddy to the level that he went to Calcutta to watch plays and dramas.

He completed part of his school education in Kadapa and did his later part of education in Chennai. He pursued his graduation from Pachaiyappa’s College in Chennai but left halfway and started working in an auditing firm. Before venturing as a director, Bommireddy NarasimhaReddy assisted in the scripting and worked as the producer of the 1938 movie Grihalakshmi. The subsequent year, he started the works for his first feature film, where he worked as the producer, director, and scriptwriter. Upon release, the movie became a great hit and established him as a successful director. In 1940, he directed a film about the widow remarriage with Chittor V. Nagaiah and A.S. Giri in pivotal roles.

Though the film garnered little in the box office, he filled it with a beautiful message. Following Sumangali, Bommireddy NarasimhaReddy released the films Devatha in 1941 and Swargaseema in 1945. Bommireddy NarasimhaReddy’s critical breakthrough happened in 1951 with the release of his film Malliswari. Set in the backdrop of the Vijayanagar Empire, the story revolves around two lovers who were separated by fate and their journey of reconciliation. Beautifully directed and scripted, the movie is the biggest blockbuster and is considered a cult film of Indian cinema. He served as a director and producer for his later projects, Bangaru Papa and Bhagya Rekha, which are tremendous successes.

He received the President’s silver medal for Best Feature Film in Telugu for Bangaru Papa and a Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film in Telugu for Bhagya Rekha.
