Geetha Narayanan Gopal is an Indian chess master from Kerala. He was born on 29th March 1989 (Age: 27). He had created a history in the world of chess by becoming Kerala's youngest Grand Master at the age of 18. His current FIDE rating is 2579 (February 2017), and Peak rating is 2611 (July 2010). He had also received the prestigious Tigran Mets Medal as a joint winner in the Lake Sevan 2007. The Tigran Mets Medal is a very special honor of the Republic of Armenia. Geetha Narayanan Gopal was born in a Nair family, to Prof. B. Narayanan Pillai and Prof. Geetha Prakasini in Muvattupuzha, Kerala. G.N Gopal has an older brother Gokul who is a Computer Engineer. He started with chess when he was ten years old with the guidance of his father, and it immediately became a major part of his life since then.

He was initially trained by TM Sankaran Namboothiripad and then later trained by Ruslan Scherbakov and Evgeny Vladimirov. G.N Gopal bagged the title of Kerala's first Grand Master in 2007 at the age of 18 and became the International Grand master in 2006 at the age of 17. His achievements are extraordinary as he was the only one to become a Grand master after just eight years of taking up chess. He became the National Junior Champion when he was 15 years old and won his first international championship in Dubai Juniors, Dubai (2003). He was a part of the four members of the Indian team in the India-Israel championship in April 2012, where India won the match against Israel. He had also represented Indian in the World Mind Sports Games (WMSG), Beijing in 2008, which was held for the very first time.

He has also secured a bronze medal in Asian Games which was organized in Guangzhou, China on November 2010 and also in the World Team Championship at Bursa, Turkey in 2010. He has received a silver medal in Asian team championship, China (May 2012) and much more. In 2009, the All India Chess Federation had barred him from participating in any chess championship as he hadn't played any National Championship. However, the AICF was charged with arbitrariness, and the ban was lifted subsequently. G.N Gopal works as an Executive (Sports) in Bharat Petroleum and is currently living in Aluva. Gopal has popularized the effect of chess in Kerala like Vishwanathan Anand has done in the country.

T.C. Yohannan is a former Indian Athlete who held a national record in long jump for almost three decades. In the year 1976 during the Summer Olympics in Quebec, Canada he represented India. His full name is Thadathuvila Chandapillai Yohannan. He hails from South India; he took birth in Kollam, Kerala on 19th May 1947. During the Tehran Asian Games in 1974, he set up a new Asian record for long jump. He jumped a distance of 8.07 meters and made history. For this feat, he got honored with an Arjuna Award in 1974 as well as many other Awards from Kerala State government as well. He hails from South India; he took birth in a small village in Kollam, Kerala on 19th May 1947. From an early age Sports interested Yohannan, he regularly took part in Inter-School Sports meets. In 1964 he represented the village Ezhukone in a sports meet. A few years later he shook hands with public sector Bhilai Steel Plant. He took part in Stell Plants sports meet and represented Bhilai Steel Plant. In 1969, he competed at National Level sports event for the first time. He got fifth place in triple jump and secured fourth place in long jump. A year later in the Nationals, he raised the bar and finished second in the long jump event. In 1971 during the Nationals in Patiala, Punjab he set a record of 7.6 meters in the long jump. Yohannan became the new champion from Kerala in athletics. Afterward, he went to Singapore to represent India internationally and got Gold in the long jump and triple jump. In 1973, he created a new national record with his 7.78 meters jump. During the Tehran Asian Games in 1974, he set up a new Asian record for long jump. He jumped a distance of 8.07 meters and made history. For this feat, he got honored with an Arjuna Award in 1974 as well as many other Awards from Kerala State government as well. Later on, Yohannan participated in Sports events in Japan, Philippines, Canada, etc. He did not disappoint and won many medals for the nation. Yohannan took his last jump in the Summer Olympics in Quebec, Canada in the year 1976. After that, he took retired. Currently, he works as an Assistant Public Relations Officer at TELCO. He is the father of two sons, his younger son Tinu is a cricketer.

Mercy Kuttan

Mercy Kuttan was born on January 1, 1960, in Kerala, India. Mercy Kuttan’s full name is Mercy Matthews-Kuttan. Mercy Kuttan is from the sports field and she does long jump and 400-meter race. She is an Indian Athlete and she is representing India from many national and international games. In the year 1982, she was the part of Asian Games in Long Jump. She was also the part of Asian Athletics Championship in the year 1981 and she did long jump and 4x400 meter relay race. She is the first Indian woman who crosses six-meter long race. Her husband’s name is Murali Kuttan and he was also a 400-meter Champion at the National level. She has two children named Sujith Kuttan and Suraj Kuttan. Mercy Kuttan and Murali Kuttan are the first couples who won the Asian Medals. Murali became the coach and he asked Mercy to switch to 400-meters from long jump. Murali and Mercy also worked for the company named Tata Steel, Jamshedpur. Both Mercy Kuttan and Murali Kuttan have their own Athletics Academy in Kochi. In the year 1976-78, she won the National School Games Championship in Long Jump. In the year 1988 she won the National Championship in 400-meter race. In the year 1981, she was a representative of India in the world Spartakyad in Moscow. She was also the part of the Commonwealth Games, Australia in the year 1982. In the year 1987, she won the Gold Medal in the SAF Games for Long Jump in Calcutta. She was the first woman who was the part of the Commonwealth Games. She is a very hard working woman and making the country proud with her talent.
