R K Selvamani

The movie ‘Pulan Visaranai’ based on the politically influenced kidnappings by Auto Shankar was the first movie directed by R K Selvamani, a Tamil movie director who is renowned for his action thrillers with heroes in the police force. He has also directed movies in Telugu. He is currently married to Tamil actress Roja who has starred some of his films. Previously he had assisted Manivannan, and it was to Vijaykanth that he had first narrated the story of his first movie. Vijaykanth, later on, went on to act in this film along with Sarathkumar, Rupini, Radha Ravi and Anandaraj. This venture was a commercial success and received critical appreciation as well although the movie had to be stalled for six months at the start due to issues between the director and Vijaykanth. Soon after ‘Pulan Visaranai, his second movie ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ was released. Its title was dedicated to LTTE leader Prabhakaran and the movie was about Veerappan. This one starred Vijaykanth along with Sarathkumar and Rupini and set his name on stone as a reputed action movie director. Because of its dealing with politically sensitive issues like Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination and the Sri Lankan Civil War, his next movie ‘Kuttrapathirikai’ was stalled. But in a landmark judgement after 15 years, in 2006, the high court allowed it to screen with an ‘A’ certificate. It received much critical acclaim. The ban was thereby questioned by many. Next came two famous love stories starring Prashanth, namely ‘Chembaruthi’ (1992) and ‘Kanmani’ (1994) starring Roja and Mohini opposite the hero respectively. The first one was well received and the second one was moderately successful. ‘Makkal Aatchi’ starring Mammootty followed this and was a raving success. In the following years, he wrote the scripts for ‘Asuran’ and ‘Rajali’. ‘Athiradi Padai’ also failed at the box office, and Selvamani incurred huge losses, as this was his maiden production venture. ‘Adimai Changili’ (1997) starring Arjun, Roja and Rambha which followed was also a failure at the box office. In 1997, he came together with Mammootty again for the movie ‘Arasiyal’ that fared a little less than their previous venture. It, however, won the third place award in the best film category in Tamil Nadu State Awards. His another political drama titled ‘Indian Express’ was stalled and he then went on to do an ambitious project titled ‘Rajasthan’ released in Telugu and later dubbed in Tamil but this too played against the director. With poor reviews, Roja’s 100th film ‘Durga’ directed by Selvamani also turned out to be a disappointment. After the shelving of one more production, he went on to become the Managing Director of a Tamil Channel ‘Tamizh Thirai’ in 2003 out of which he opted out later on after which he helped in the promotional activities regarding his wife Roja’s election campaigns. Then he began work on Pulan Visaranai II starring Prashanth in 2005. After much delay and troubles, it was only in 2015, that this sequel got released.
