Born in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India; Ramji is an Indian film cinematographer who presently lives in Chennai. According to him, cinematography is a language which can be easily understood by everyone. Also, he says that this profession gives him the freedom to speak what he feels; and not making differentiations on the basic of difference in culture and living styles. According to his interviews, it’s a fact that he chooses the script that is too close or related to the real life and deals with practicality. Ramji confesses it without any hesitation that this choosing this career of cinematography wasn’t a planned venture. It was all by accident and a chance. He began his career with Shri N.K. Viswanath. From 1989, he started assisting P.C. Suriname, who was a big reason to groom his talent and personality. He nurtured him from the scratch and prepared him for the Indian cinema. He used to work with Jeeva, K.V. Anand, Thiru, Balamurugan, Muthukumar and MS Prabhu. Working as an assistant, he did work for the movies- Gopura Vasalile, Meera Amaran, Thevar Makan and Thiruda.
But in the year 1996, he decided to work all by himself without any support or guidance. His debut movie for cinematography was Valley; which starred actor Sathyaraj and actress Meena. Raj Films was the producer, and its director was Mr. Raj Kapoor. In this competitive world of cinema to survive; a person needs to present his work in front of the audience many times a year. But Ramji is way too different in this respect. He used to cinematograph a movie once in 2 or3 years; for the ones that used to satisfy his demanded requirements of practicality and realism. He has a fresh, style and authenticity in his work of cinematography in films he chooses. He is an utmost straightforward in nature that is appreciated by critics and his audience. He once mentioned in an interview that during the initial stages of his learning with P.C. sir, he gained so much that he described it as learning the essence of life.
