Vathiyar Raman

Vathiyar Raman was one of the finest deputy actors in Tamil cinema. Born on January 1, 1933, in a bourgeois Tamil family, he transitioned from a playwright to a versatile actor. Driven by his endless passion, he made his debut in the movie Thanneer Thanneer (Water Water), which premiered in October 1980, highlighting the negligence of social issues faced by human beings. His lead role as RK Raman in the film touched the hearts of many, leading to his immense growth. The movie won the National Award in 1981 for the best Tamil film. Since then, he has acted in various films like Thulasi, Ethir Kaatru, Vanakkam Vathiyare, etc. It was a period when Tamil theatre was evolving.

He started his career as a writer and later joined a theatre group. He has had a keen interest in writing stories in various genres. Both tragic and comic, his work came to light in several publications. His sharp wit and silly puns attracted a lot of people. Considered to be the unexpected discovery of K. Balachandar, Vathiyar Raman developed a niche for himself over decades. From then on, he starred in films like Ezhavathu Manithan, Oru Indhiya Kanavu, etc. He also worked as a director in a few movies. Vathiyar Raman’s demise occurred unexpectedly due to sudden heart failure at the age of 79 in Guduvancheri, Chennai. He is not only remembered for his prolific writing but also for his outstanding performances that left a mark on everyone’s heart.
