Gajanan Watve, born in 1917 in Poona, was a renowned Bhavageet singer and Kavya Gayak. Fundamentally, he was a teacher who taught music to nearly three generations of artists. His son, Milind Watve, who works in the Department of Biology at IISER, Pune, inherited singing from his father. Belonging to the era of Bhavgeet singing, Watve was famous in the 1960s, with his recordings played on the gramophone. He was prominent for his musical interpretation of poems for over six decades. He performed his first public performance in 1935 at the age of 18 at Fergusson College, and his performances were followed by programmes aired on All India Radio. Watve sang approximately 2000 songs, but due to increasing technological advancement, only 70 were recorded on gramophone records. Gagani Ugawala Sayantara, written by the poet Anil, was the first song Watve sang in 1941 and became his most famous one. He also sang many other highly admired songs on the list, like "Mee Niranjanatil Waat," "Dona Dhruvanwar Doghe Aapan," "Radhe Tuza Sail Ambada," "Vara Fofavala," "Yamunakathi Taj Mahal," and the patriotic song "Garja Jayajayakar Kranticha." Except for Marathi Bhavageet, he also composed several Hindi-Urdu ghazals and, unexpectedly, Thumri.

He actively made new tunes with his experiments in music until his late 80s or up to 2007. Watve was also enamoured with poetry and purchased several handpicked outstanding books by prominent poets like Anil, Manmohan, Sanjeevani Marathe, Shanta Shelke, Keshavsut, and B. R. Tambe. He was also in love with playing the harmonium and tabla. Most of the time, Watve, worked together with Prakash Bhonde of Swaranand Musical Organization, violinist Prabhakar Jog, and Parshuram Bapat.
