Azambai, or Azambai of Kohlapur, born Vidya Pisal, was an Indian classical singer. She was born on 7th December 1906 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Very little information is known about her except for the recordings she left behind, which establish that she was a classical vocalist with exceptional talent and quality. She was trained in the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana vocal style of Ustad Alladiya Khan by one of his sons – Manjhi Khan or Bhurji Khan during the 1930s era. She was recorded by the Odeon Records Gramophone Company of the British Raj. She was presented with the title of Azambai by the Station Director of A.I.R., Mr. Bukhari. However, only around two dozen of her records survived and remain in the Collectors’ Archives till the present day. This record was cut down in 1936. Some of her beloved songs include Rag Durga, Purba Tarana, Tilang Bahar, Khayal In Raga Nand, etc. Apart from the film (Marathi talkie) Naganand, she does not seem to have acted in anything else. Naganand was a bi-lingual, Marathi and Hindi film released in 1935. She died on 25th July 1986 in her home in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
