K. P. Ummer is a veteran Malayalam actor who was active in the cinema since early 60’s to late 90’s. He acted in various kind of character roles in the movies and became a household name in Kerala. He is the only actor to return the state award given to him.
Later, the Malayalam film fraternity instituted an award in his memory and gave the award to actors in Malayalam film industry. In the year 1956, he made his debut as an actor in film 'Ranchan Enna Pauran.' For four years, he had no work, and in 1960, he acted in movie 'Umma.' In this movie, actress Rajakumari falls in love with K.P.Ummer.

It was from 1967; he started accepting character roles in movies. His first film in which Ummer played the role of character role was ‘Udhyogastha' (1967) which had Prem Nazir, Madhu, Sharada, Sathyan in lead roles. Another popular movie that featured Ummer as a character actor includes 'Urangatha Sundary' (1969) which had actors like Sathyan, K.V. Shanthi, Rajasree, and Jayabharathi in lead roles.

He also played the villain’s role in many of Prem Nazir’s movies. Ummer even grabbed the character artiste’s role in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. He was a professional stage actor and a renowned football player. He was born on 11th October 1934 in Calicut and died in Chennai on 29 October 2001.
