K. P. Ummer

K. P. Ummer is a veteran Malayalam actor who was active in the cinema since early 60’s to late 90’s. He acted in various kind of character roles in the movies and became a household name in Kerala. He is the only actor to return the state award given to him.

Later, the Malayalam film fraternity instituted an award in his memory and gave the award to actors in Malayalam film industry. In the year 1956, he made his debut as an actor in film 'Ranchan Enna Pauran.' For four years, he had no work, and in 1960, he acted in movie 'Umma.' In this movie, actress Rajakumari falls in love with K.P.Ummer.

The film was a super duper hit, and it is one of the most significant films in the history of Malayalam cinema. The film had a powerful performance of Prem Nazir. It was from 1967; he started accepting character roles in movies. His first film in which Ummer played the role of character role was ‘Udhyogastha' (1967) which had Prem Nazir, Madhu, Sharada, Sathyan in lead roles. Another popular movie that featured Ummer as a character actor includes 'Urangatha Sundary' (1969) which had actors like Sathyan, K.V. Shanthi, Rajasree, and Jayabharathi in lead roles.

P Subramaniam directed and produced the film. His notable movies are 'Padunna Puzha' and 'Kadal' (1968), 'Virunnukari' (1969), 'Pearl View,' 'Ningalenne Communistakki,' 'Vazhve Mayam ' and 'Dathuputhran' (1970), 'C.I.D. Nazir' (1971), 'Sambhavami Yuge Yuge ' (1972), 'Football Champion' (1973), 'Thacholi Marumakan Chandu'(1974), 'Neelapponmaan' (1975), etc.

He has acted with all leading stars of his time. He acted in a total of 250 films since 1971 which is given here. They are like 19 films in 1971, 13 films in 1972, 20 films in 1973, 16 films in 1974, 22 films in 1975, 29 films in 1976, 27 films in 1977, 25 films in 1978, 18 films in 1979, 12 films in 1980, 14films in 1981, 11 films in 1982, 13 films in 1983 and 16 films in 1984.

He also played the villain’s role in many of Prem Nazir’s movies. Ummer even grabbed the character artiste’s role in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. He was a professional stage actor and a renowned football player. He was born on 11th October 1934 in Calicut and died in Chennai on 29 October 2001.
