Om Prakash Sharma, also known as Janpriya Lekhak Om Prakash Sharma, is regarded as one of Hindi detective fiction's best and most gifted writers. He was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on December 25, 1924, but later relocated to Delhi. Jai Prakash Sharma and Gauri Shankar Sharma are his younger brothers. He worked at the Delhi Cloth Milland resided in Pahari Dhiraj in a leased house. He later relocated to Meerut and is the father of four sons: Surendra Sharma, Virendra Sharma, and Mahendra Sharma.
He joined the Indian Freedom Struggle after being inspired by socialist and communist ideas, and he was imprisoned twice by the British Raj for his involvement in the cause. This was also the time when he began writing. His preoccupation with reading sparked his interest in writing. He has expressed his disdain for religious and social orthodoxy on several occasions in his works. He also published socially relevant books and historical inscriptions in addition to mystery tales. Many of his works were big successes when television was not widely used as a form of entertainment. He turned down multiple opportunities to write for Hindi feature films because he despised the material world and preferred his leisurely, peaceful, and artistic life.
