Professor B. R. Deodhar was born on 11 September 1901. He was an Indian classical singer, musicologist, and music educator. He was a vocalist of the Khayal genre of Hindustani classical music. Deodhar was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1964, the highest honor conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance, and Drama. In 1976, he was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India. Born in Miraj, in present-day Sangli district of Maharashtra, on 11 September 1901, Deodhar began his training in music with Nilkanth Buwa Alurmath, the guru of noted singer & educator Vishnu Digambar Paluskar (1872–1931) & a disciple of Balakrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar of the Gwalior gharana.

, another disciple of Paluskar. Then, he joined the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and became one of the leading disciple of Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, the founder of the institution. He was the only student of Paluskar who was allowed to pursue formal education. After his matriculation, he also pursued higher education and received a B.A. degree. He also studied Western classical music.

Sadashivbuwa Jadhav of the Gokhale gharana, binkaar Murad Khan of Indore gharana, Shinde Khan of Talwandi gharana, and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of Patiala gharana, with whom he was associated for many years and who became an important musical influence on his gayaki, or singing style. He incorporated styles from several traditions, gharanas, into his singing, paving the way for his career as a musicologist.
Over time, he also collected musical compositions and rare ragas from the traditions he was associated with throughout his career. Deodhar established the Deodhar School of Music in Mumbai, breaking from the gharana tradition.
