Kotamraju Karthik got also associated with the 3D period drama animated film Kochadaiiyaan starring the Tamil industry superstar Rajnikanth and directed by his daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth. Kochadaiiyaan was the first film in India to utilize the motion capture technology, and Kotamraju Karthik got bagged the opportunity to be an included in the team. When Kotamraju Karthik starts working on a project, he first finalizes a concept and designs accordingly. According to him, this is the most important task as it is when the entire project takes shape. The abstractions are visualized through storyboards and drawing. It is only after all this that the technical works start which are texturing, binding, shading, rigging, lighting, animating, rendering and so on.
Working in Kochadaiiyaan was a dream for many technicians. Kotamraju Karthik says that motion capture technology which was used in this film was old elsewhere but new to India. He was very much impressed by the artistic stylization done in Kochadaiiyaan. Since motion capture was new in India, it was hard to find suitably trained technicians to handle the project. This tech needed both high-end software and expensive hardware. Kotamraju Karthik says that in the initial stages, it was a bit difficult to trace the mistakes done by artists, but eventually, they overcame all that. Kotamraju Karthik and team use software like Maya, Motion Builder, Softimage XSI and some more from Autodesk productions for visual effects production, Eyeon Fusion and Foundry Nuke Compositor for image composition and PFTrack for background replacement. He says there is not much difference in working between Hindi and South Indian movies as an artist.
