Savita Bhatti, wife of the late social satirist,
Jaspal Bhatti
has done small roles in films like Fanaa (2006), Mere Dad Ki Maruti (2013),
Chak De Phatte
(2008) and in shows like Nach Baliye. She recently resumed her husband’s ‘Nonsense Club’ which raises voice against all the social and political evils India faces today.
She made her acting debut in the 1989 tv show
Flop Show
as Preeti. She was not a consistent actress and did acting now and then, sometimes at gaps of 4 to 5 years also. It was only after the famous comedian-actor-director and her husband Jaspal Bhatti’s tragic death in 2012 that she came into the limelight by following her husband’s legacy. She regrouped the Nonsense Club and did satiric street shows on women’s safety, their position in the society including a play on road safety, insisting drivers to always wear seat belts while driving. Issues raised by Bhatti’s club include Bride burning, selling bridegrooms, fuel price hike, adulterated food and almost every problem India faced including the high onion prices.
For the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Savita Bhatti was announced AAP( Aam Aadmi Party)’s official candidate running from Chandigarh. Though she did appearances as AAP’s representative raising the same issues her Nonsense Club does, she decided to withdraw her nomination weeks before the election for reasons unstated. As of now, her main focus is to carry her husband’s legacy forward.
