Mamta Dutta was first seen on TV in the Hindi serial 'Parivaar-Kartavya Ki Pariksha' during 2007-08, which was telecast on Zee TV. It was the story of a middle-class girl who tries to support her family and, in turn earns the wrath of her mother-in-law. There were fresh actors in the serial and the story related to Indian masses when Hindi TV serials were ruled by Saas Bahu serials and gorgeous women who had a larger-than-life image. The serial was produced by and for Miditech and directed by and Yash Chauhan. Mamta acted as Mallishka in the serial and the audiences appreciated her performance in the serial. The masses instantly liked the serial and Mamta was known in the TV acting circles.

In 2010, Taarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma, one of the most popular TV serials, came out with a new story with a bhootni ( female ghost) in a negative role. Mamta was offered that role and she accepted the challenge. The story continued through several episodes and Mamta received a huge appreciation from the audience for her negative role. The storyline was introduction of the ghost on Gokuldham Society where all the characters of the serial stay and ultimately the foul plan of thieves and the female ghost is traced by Tapu, the son of Dayaben and Jethalal Gada and they are handed over to the Police.

Then came her next serial in 2011 on Sahara One, Rishton Ke Bhawar Mein Uljhi Niyati. It was produced by and ran through more than 800 episodes witnessing the popularity of the show. Mamta acted in a negative role in the serial as Yamini, a senior politician who has a crush on the male lead, Ishwar (played by ). She was again highly appreciated for her performance in a negative role very successfully.

Many fans started thinking that Mamta and Munmun are sisters. Actually, they are not sisters but good co-stars. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah made Mamta popular. Although her character ended, she received requests from the fans to continue her role in the show. It is exciting to see a huge set of audiences watching the series for more than a decade. In 2018, she returned to the series with the character Darawani Dulhan.
