Hindi Producer Niret Alva

Niret Alva, an anchor-producer of the television industry, was born in Bangalore in 1965 to Niranjan and Margaret Alva (both lawyers). Following his mother’s election to the Rajya Sabha, he moved to Delhi in 1974. He possesses a bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College (Delhi University) and a post-graduate diploma in Journalism at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC). Further, he went to Holland to pursue a television course in News and Current Affairs from the Radio Netherlands Training Centre in Hilversum.

He has also completed his LLB from Mumbai University. He began his career when television was still controlled by the government in 1988, by holding the post of trainee reporter and scriptwriter at the Press Trust of India. Soon after, he began working as a correspondent on Eyewitness by the Hindustan Times’ video news magazine in 1990. For the next two years, he was reporting from various places within the country about diverse topics from sex and violence to Rajiv Gandhi’s assassin.

He worked for documentaries, business shows, news, as well as programs directed for the youth. He is known to have scripted and directed ‘The Great Descent’, an award-winning documentary based on a journey about the Brahmaputra post the 2000 floods on a raft. The company, in the 24 years of its existence, has been successful in producing series and programming.

Some of its top clients include StarPlus, Disney, Zoom, Discovery Channel, etc. It has covered different genres from children’s shows (Galli Galli Sim Sim) to reality shows (Indian Idol). Miditech’s weekly environment based show titled ‘Living On The Edge’, which was hosted by Niret is the proud recipient of the Panda Award at Wildscreen in Bristol (1996).
