Waqif Moradabadi, an Urdu poet, was born on October 26, 1904, in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. His real name was Sayyed Yaquubul Hasan Naqvi. After completing his education, he started his career as a first-grade school teacher and a song and dialogue writer for Indian flicks. Throughout the years of the partition period, he struggled financially, but his employment as an Urdu instructor at Dayal Singh College helped. After his retirement, he was granted a scholarship of 5,000 rupees per year from the UGC.
But he did not live long and died on December 15, 1966, due to cancer. His body was buried at Feroz Shah Kotla Graveyard on December 16, 1966. Waqif Moradabadi was a humorist by instinct and temperament and had an attractive mode of presentation, which won him loud applause in mushairas and literary gatherings. He wrote books such as Rubaiyat Omer Khayyam, Umar Khayyam Ki Rubaiyat, etc. These books were available in Urdu and Persian.
