Phanishwar Nath Mandal Renu was a novelist and memoirist born on 4th March 1921 in Araria, Bihar. His father, Sheela Nath Mandal, was an active participant in Indian National Movement. He went to Biratnagar Adarsh Vidyalaya in Biratnagar, Nepal. He was an IA pass-out from Kashi Hindu Vishvavidyalay. In 1942, after passing IA, he participated in the Indian Freedom Struggle. In 1950, he participated in the Nepali revolutionary movement and helped establish democracy in Nepal.

Phanishwar was married to Rekha Renu. His second wife was Padma, and his third wife was Latika. Latika was a nurse. When he was admitted at the Patna hospital, he met her, and they tied the knot in 1951. With Rekha, he has a daughter, Kavita Rai. His son with Padma is Padma Parag Renu. His other kids are Navneeta and Aparajit, and his last son is Dakshineshwar Prasad Rai.

Phanishwar Nath is well-known for promoting the contemporary rural Indian’s voice via Aanchalik Upanyas. He was one of the pioneers of modern Hindi literature. Phanishwar Nath and Bengali novelist Satinath Bhaduri shared a close bond. He even wrote a memoir for Satinath in Bengali titled Bhaduriji.

His short story Panchlight was later made into a TV Short film. The same story was adapted into a film, “Panchlait,” in 2017. Maila Anchal is his first novel, which is a masterpiece in his writings.

Some of his novels are Parti Parikatha, Juloos, Krishay ki Kahani, Kitne Chaurahe, Paltu Babu Road, and Is Jal Pralay Main. Some of his Memoirs are Rinjal Dhanjal, Van Tulsi ki Gandh, Nepali Kranti Katha, Shrut Ashrut Purva, and Totapur. Phanishwar was honoured with Padma Shri in 1970. But he returned it during the Internal Emergency.

He died on 11th April 1977 at 56.
