Born in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, Mahmeet Syed, also known as the “Nightingale of Kashmir,” has fully regenerated the love of music among millions of Kashmiris and non-Kashmiris worldwide. Her mother, Yasmeen Mir, a music graduate, encouraged her. Mahmeet’s singing career started when she was six years old; she performed for the first time on the stage of her school, the Presentation Convent. Her fellow batchmates, teachers, and principal were so greatly impressed by her singing that they would request her to sing in free periods or at school events. The encouragement in her school pushed her forward to take prior music lessons. She used to attend music classes with her mother, and over a long period of time learned, she learnt to play several musical instruments as well including Harmonium.
Mahmeet believes that her success is all because of the unconditional love and support of her family. Mahmeet’s first music album, “Cholhama Roshay Roshay,” was released in 2005 by Neel Akash Films. The album gained overnight popularity not only in Kashmir but also in abroad places like the UK, USA, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia, making Mahmeet an icon. After publishing her first album, Mahmeet further published six of her albums, which maintained the #1 spot for months and some even years. She became a superstar and received offers from radio, television, and films. She even received several awards for reviving Kashmir music and influencing the youths of Kashmir to follow their tradition and the path of peace and love. She was nominated for “Padma Shri,” and received an achievement award from the president of India, Mr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
Mahmeet stopped performing for about four years due to her mother’s illness, and in 2014, she made a comeback and started working on her new music album. While towards the end of 2015, she performed in places like Melbourne, Abu Dhabi, Sydney, Canberra, and Dubai. Mahmeet has also mastered three Degrees from the University of Kashmir and Indira Gandhi National University. She has been mentioned even in the history books of Kashmir for being a girl who has transformed and revived the love of music in Kashmir. Mahmeet aims to promote the rich culture of Kashmir traditions through her songs and inspire the young generation to do so.
