, India's top band. He was the band's lead vocalist as well as the percussionist (mostly tabla). Asheem played tabla for the Bengali band Niharika in the early 1980s.

, a Niharika fan, met him at a concert in 1984. For the following three years, they experimented with their music without producing fresh lyrics, with Sen as the guitarist and Chakravarty on tabla and percussion. Despite having no professional musical training, he abandoned his career in advertising to pursue his musical love, forming the band Indian Ocean with his friend Susmit Sen. He and Susmit began playing together in college, and the band was founded in the 1990s. Ashim was able to sing and play the tabla at the same time.
His admirer called him "a man with a golden voice." They recorded their first demo in 1990, and Susmit paid for it by selling his guitar. The 45-minute tape contained seven songs, all recorded on a single day. Despite the hasty recording, HMV was thrilled with the demo tape and offered an album deal. The Indian Ocean became a famous rock band from India and they are largely regarded as the forefathers of the fusion rock genre in the country. The band consists of Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty,

. The band's musical approach is best described as folk and fusion music. It is an experimental genre that combines raga (traditional Indian sounds) with rock music, guitars, and drums, as well as Indian folk songs at times.

They are among the five featured artists in the world's first music personalization initiative, DRP. In its 2014 list of the "25 Greatest Indian Rock Songs of the Last 25 Years," "Rolling Stone India" included two songs from the album Kandisa (2000), Ma Rewa and Kandisa. Asheem Chakravarty was admitted to the hospital in Doha in October after a heart attack. He was unconscious for a short time but quickly recovered. He died of a heart attack on 25th December 2009 in New Delhi.
