The Indian Ocean is considered to be the pioneers of Indian fusion rock scene. The band originated in New Delhi, India in the year 1990. Indian Ocean’s current band members include Nikhil Rao, Amit Kilam, Rahul Ram, Himanshu Joshi, and Tuheen Chakraborty. Previously, Sushmit Sen, Rahul Ram, Amit Kilam and Asheem Chakravarty were the original band members, until Asheem passed away on December 25, 2009. Sushmit Sen parted ways with the rock band in the year 2013. Sanjeev Sharma has also contributed to the band’s fame as their lyricist for multitudinous albums. Folk and fusion is the signature genre of the Indian Ocean. They amalgamate traditional Indian tones or Raga with classic rock music, with drums and guitars.

The Indian Ocean has successfully integrated the mythology, revolution, Sufism, regional shlokas, and environmentalism through their jazz-spiced fusion. Since the year 2010, disputes over negotiating contracts as well as copyright issues have forced the Indian Ocean to release their latest album 16/330 Khajoor road free for users online. Their creations also featured in the 2014 listings by Rolling Stones India for ‘25 Best Indian Rock Songs.’ The band once performed in the cultural fest of IIT Roorkee (then, University of Roorkee) ‘Thomso.’ The Indian Ocean gained high critical acclaim for their music in the Indian movie Masaan. Asheem Chakravarty was the original table player of the band, and one of the vocalists. His style largely influenced the contemporary music genre of Indian Ocean.

He died in 2009, from a cardiac arrest in New Delhi. Amit Kilam is a self-taught drum player and vocalist. He is considered to be the backbone of the solid rhythms of Indian Ocean. Rahul Ram is the bass guitarist and one of their vocalists. He is an IIT Kanpur graduate and an activist. In 2010, Tuheen Chakraborty joined The Indian Ocean after Asheem’s death. After Sushmit Sen’s departure in the year 2013, Nikhil Rao, an engineer by qualification, was offered Sen’s position. He is now the lead guitarist for them. The Indian Ocean has produced numerous studio albums like Tandanu, Black Friday, 16/330 Khajoor Road, Indian Ocean, and many more. Their Bollywood projects include movies like Masaan, Satyagraha, Leaving Home- the Life and Music of Indian Ocean, Peepli Live, Yeh Mera India, Gulaal, Swaraj- the Little Republic, and many more. From the early 90s till the present days, the Indian Ocean has consistently served its fans.
