Sheikh Mukhtar was Chaudhry Ashfaq Ahmed's son (a railway police inspector born in Karachi, British India; now Pakistan). Sheikh Mukhtar was born in Delhi on December 24, 1914. He grew up at Gali Choodi Waalan (Near Jama Mosque, Delhi) and received his education at Anglo Arabic School, Ajmeri Gate, Delhi. Sheikh Mukhtar's father wanted him to join the police or the army, but he was more interested in theatre.
