Prakash Mehra was born on 13 July 1939 in Bijnor at Uttar Pradesh. He spent his childhood days in Gandhi Gali, Chandni Chowk, Fatehpuri and his Aunt's house. By 1950, he started his career as a production controller. In 1968, he directed his first movie Haseena Maan Jayegi starring Shashi Kapoor who played a double role. Later, by the year 1973 he directed and produced the film Zanjeer. This talkie lead him to make a relationship with Amitabh Bachchan that helped him to make seven more films of which six are huge box office hits.

They include Hera Pheri in 1976, Lawaaris in 1981, Sharaabi, Namak Halaal, Khoon Pasina and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar were the box office hit movies and the seventh talkie is Jaadugar starring Aditya Pancholi as well, which failed to make a mark. As a result, it ended the first successful career phase of Bachchan. Zanjeer leveled up the career of Amitabh Bachan as a famous actor which lead to the collaboration for almost two decades. Mehra also worked with Anil Kapoor. By 1991, he produced and directed the movie Zindagi Ek Jua which was also not up to the expected level of success.

After that, Mehra introduced Actor Puru Raajkumar, the son of veteran actor Raaj Kumar in the movie Bal Brahmachari which was also unsuccessful. He never directed any shows. Later, with Mithun Chakraborthy he joined and produced the play Dalal in the mid of 1990s. This talkie is a Box office hit. By 2006, from Indian Motion Picture Directors Association he received the Life Time Achievement Award followed by the Life Time Achievement award from Indian Motion Picture Producers Association in the year 2008, September 19. He tried to venture into Hollywood.

He was the first one to take a shot. Downstream, in 1980's he struggled for a joint venture with Frank Yandolino for the cinema The God Connection.
