She completed her schooling from the Indian High School, Dubai with a specialization in computer science, as schools did not offer many courses related to film making, which she wanted to pursue from a very young age. She graduated from Manipal University, after specializing in Television Production. Then, she went on to attain her post graduation from one of the most reputed film school in India, The Whistling Woods, in film direction.

While in Dubai, Japinder worked for a reputed English TV channel City 7 TV, as a news reporter and a producer. This exposed her more towards video production and other elements. Her works of short films, like via Kargil, which can be viewed on her official youtube channel, was screened many times in the film festivals of India. At a young age of 26, the talented girl made her first debut in Bollywood film industry with Dilliwali Zalim Girlfriend, directed by Japinder and produced by Taranpreet Singh and Manjeet Kaur.

But sadly the movie did not receive a good response at the box office. She have also worked as a part of the marketing and making of Aarakshan, a movie starring Amitabh Bachchan It was her mother who motivated her to take the big leap of directing her first movie at a young age. While speaking for an interview with Mahek Punjabi, she said that her family is her main support and her brother is her backbone. Her family is a tightly knit together and have a good rapport with each other. Her brother supported her throughout her journey.

Her family has always supported her to follow her dreams and to never let anybody convince her that she is too young for independently directing movies. She also started a production house called Jap Films with brother, Taranpreet Singh. Speaking about her debut film, she says that, “Looking back, I can say I was very lucky as a first time director to have put together a very experienced and talented team to help me.” When she started her journey, she was not familiar with many people. The whole process of movie making right from brainstorming on the idea, script writing till the release was really hard. Getting a really good release was the main task that she faced. Dilli Wali Zalim Girlfriend proved to be a really good learning experience for her. It seems as if, she is more confident about her future in her industry, now that she is more aware of the audience of India.
