Ajit Kumar Barjatya is an Indian producer. Born in the Barjatya clan, Ajit always knew that he would eventually work in the TV serials and film industry. Ajit is the son of the eminent personality, Tarachand Barjatya, who laid the foundation of the Rajshri Productions in the late 1940s. His brothers are Kamal Kumar Barjatya and also Raj Kumar Barjatya. Kavita Barjatya is his niece and Sooraj Barjatya is his nephew.

He is a strict follower of Jainism and practices traditional values that his Marwadi roots define. His son was Rajjat Barjatya, the MD and CEO of Rajshri Productions. Rajjat had been fighting cancer for several years and finally succumbed to it on July 30, 2016. Neha Bharjatya is Ajit’s daughter-in-law and he has two granddaughters. In the beginning, Ajit joined family venture of Rajshri Production as the Director in 1967 but then also became a part of the Sangram Pictures Pvt. Limited in 1969 at the same post of the Director.

The three Barjatya brothers worked tirelessly to help Rajshri Productions touch new heights. Ajit started off work in partnership with his father and brothers with the 1972 Hindi family comic drama serial “Piya Ka Ghar”. It starred Jaya Bachchan and aired on Zee TV. Ajit received mention as the Associate Producer. Then followed the 1973 hit, “Saudagar” that starred Amitabh Bachchan as a trader. This happened to be Rajshri’s first undertaking in feature films.

Here again, he was an associate producer. He reprised his post as an associate producer for the projects that followed like the 1976 classic “Tapasya”, an adaptation of Ashapurna Devi’s novel. A Hindi romantic musical “Chitchor” that starred Amol Palekar. Shabana Azmi’s “Ek Baar Kaho” in 1980, for the distribution of “Saaransh” in 1984, which starred Anupam Kher and “Maine Pyar Kiya” the 1989 musical romantic movie that made actor Salman Khan a public figure and a face for Rajshri. It was also the debut for Ajit’s nephew Sooraj Bharjatya.

He was the co-producer of the 1979 classic “Naiyya”. Post-1989, Ajit was promoted to the position of a producer, and in 1994 when “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun” was released, and it broke all the records. The success of the film spurred Ajit to produce more family-oriented movies that Rajshri Productions had become a symbol of in the 1900s. The 1999 hit “Hum Saath Saath Hain” was a testament to the peak in Rajshri’s fame over the time.

Rajshri continued to churn out hits like “Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon,” which set off Kavita Barjatya’scareer, and movies like “Vivaah” and “Ek Vivaah… Aisa Bhi” that were commercially successful. After a long spell of rather unsuccessful movies, his latest project “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” premiered in 2015, and it met with an even greater hype and fanfare.
