Maithili Sharan Gupt is one of India’s modern poet born in Chirgaon in Uttar Pradesh. He is known for using Braj Basha dialects and mixed with Awadhi. He is also the recipient of Padma Bhushan. For his famous book Bharat-Bharati (1912) which was based on the backdrop of freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi gave him the title Rashtra Kavi.

The poet was born to father Seth Ramcharan Gupta and mother, Kashibai. In his childhood, he disliked going to school. Hence his father arranged for his education at home, and he studied Sanskrit, English, and Bengali. His notable Hindi poems include ‘Saket,’ 'Rang Mein Bhang,' and 'Matrubhumi'etc.

He has given importance to women character in all his literary works. For instance in Saket revolved around Urmila, wife of Lakshmana and, while another of his toils 'Yashodhara,’ it revolves around Yashodhara, the wife of Gautama Buddha.
