In the early 1970s, he returned to India, and in 1975, he released the album Ananda Shankar and His Music. Also, in 2005, the album was re-released.

During the late 90s, Ananda Shankar worked and toured in the United Kingdom with London DJ State of Bengal. The result of the collaboration was the album Walking On. His sitar sounds merged with hip-hop and breakbeat in the album Walking On. In 2005, his song Raghupati featured in the famous video game.

Ananda Shankar won the National Award in 1974 for best music direction. His notable discographies are India Remembers Elvis, Missing You, A Musical Discovery of India, Sa-Re-Ga Machan, Temptations, Ananda, and Arpan. In 2010 and 2011, his music was used on the NBC Comedy Show. Ananda Shankar died on 26 March 1999 due to cardiac failure. He was 56 years old at the time of his death.
