Chitragupt, also known as Chitragupt Shrivastava, an Indian film music director in Hindi and Bhojpuri cinema, was born November 16 1917. His birthplace was Sawreji, a village in the Saran district (now Gopalganj district) of Bihar. For his education, he did a Masters in Economics and Journalism. He had two sons, Anand and Milind Shrivastava, also Bollywood music directors. He then became a lecturer at Patna University. Due to his interest in music, he took lessons from Pandit Shiv Prasad Tripathi and sang bhajans for Puja celebrations. 

In 1944, he resigned as a lecturer and moved to Bombay (Mumbai) to pursue his dream job as a composer. He was introduced to S. N. His first work as an independent composer was from the film Lady Robinhood (1946). His first successful project was the duet Adaa Se Jhoomte Hue from the movie Sindbad The Sailor, released in 1952. It was RD Burman who recommended Chitragupt to give music for mythological films. He composed music for many other AVM Productions, which include Bhabhi (1957), Barkha (1959), Main Chup Rahungi (1962), and Main Bhi Ladki Hoon (1964). 

The Bhojpuri film Industry came into existence in 1962. Chitragupt was the first to give music in movies like Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaio, Laagi Nahi Chhoote Rama, and Bhauji. He suffered a heart attack in 1968 and a paralytic stroke in 1974. He recorded his last song in the film Shiv Ganga (1988). In the same year, his sons Anand and Milind debuted Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. He took his last breath on January 14 1991, at Bombay Hospital. He is known for his work as a music composer in the movies Adhi Raat Ke Baad (1965), Wedding Celebration (1962), Zabak (1962), and Saat Samundar Paar (1965). He has worked on the soundtrack for movies like Apna Bhi Koi Hota (1984), Intezar (1973), Vaasna (1968), and Aulad (1968).
