Abhay Rustum Sopori is a famous Indian Santoor player, composer, and conductor. Abhay was born on June 7, 1979, in the city of Srinagar, in the Kashmir valley of Jammu and Kashmir, into a Kashmiri Pandit family. His father was the famous Santoor veteran Santoor player Pandit Bhajan Sopori. When Abhay was ten years, he received first place in the State Music Competition in Srinagar. Abhay had sung as a playback vocalist in the National Award-winning Kashmiri feature film Bub. He has also performed in documentaries, television shows, and serials.
Abhay represents Kashmir's Sufiana Gharana, sprung from a line of ancient Santoor musicians spanning nine generations and more than 300 years. Abhay learned Western Classical Music, which provided him a base for systematic compositional work. He made his santoor debut in 1997, in a prestigious concert, in New Delhi. Following that, Abhay played in other festivals, including the United States of America, Russia, Brazil, France, Mauritius, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Germany, and Italy. Moreover, Abhay played the signature tune of the Aaj Tak news channel in India. Abhay Sopori's filmography includes Songs of Paradise, Kab Tak (2011), and Ziyarat (2011).
