The legendary actress Bina Rai was born on June 4, 1936 into a conservative family in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. As a first-year arts student at Isabella Theodore College in Lucknow in 1950, she saw an advertisement for a contest for talented actors and she applied; to her surprise, she received a call from the sponsors. She won the contest, and prize worth Rs. 25,000. The veteran producer

offered her the lead role in his film Kali Ghata (1951). Her next two films, Shole and Aurat were of moderate success. It was only after Anarkali, she became a big star. In the film, she played the role of Anarkali with sensitivity, as an ill-fated dancing girl who is in love with Salim. Her performance got critical acclaim too. The film’s songs are even popular today.Â

After the success of Taj Mahal (1963), she acted only three more films, after which, she bid bye to the industry. She had a son,
Prem Krishen
, who got a break in the 1970s and he had only given one hit film. Therefore, he launched his own TV production, Cinevistaas Limited. Bira Rai, died on December 6,2009. Her husband, Premnath (a leading actor) too had died earlier in 1992. She was survived by her two sons, Prem Kishen and Kailash (Monty). Premnath’s sister Krishna was married to Raj Kapoor.
